Why ultramarine?

01:53 Dec 31 2013
Times Read: 687

Ultramarine, a shade of blue, is best described as a deep blue. If you are familiar with the stone, Lapis Lazuli, you know the exact color of ultramarine.

As used in artwork, ultramarine was literally ground lapis lazuli powder. Now, of course, it is or can be created synthetically. Ultramarine was used significantly in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance by certain artists and also throughout the 17th and 18th century.

But enough history Lysi. As much as I wish I was talented with the ability to draw or paint, my fine arts skills would make any parent of a third grade child proud. Instead, my artistic side caged by the words I write, which all too often, seem wholly inadequate.

It should come as no surprise to you, if you read or even looked at my profile, that I am drawn to the color blue and its many manifestations.

Ultramarine, the color representation of center sea; depth, calm, suspended reality, a whole life apart from earthly life, seen as a microcosm but a remarkable a macrocosm; desolation, devotion, a rebirth of the soul; representing both life and death and life anew; boundless and wild, untamable spirit; stability, for what is more permanent than the sea? Wisdom, power, inner serenity.

Such writings shall be listed in this section of the journal if all works as intended.
